Simulation Space - Avery Hall

Objective: To examine the effects of sunlight within a space to which I have a ritual-like interaction with

Site: The lobby & staircases of Avery Hall on-campus at Columbia University GSAPP in New York City

Software: All images & time-lapses were made in Blender(Cycles) & After Effects.
All visuals fabricated unless stated otherwise

Date: 22nd February 2022

Methodology

Site: Vertical Circulation of Avery Hall
3D scan with Matterport: https://www.arch.columbia.edu/admissions/virtual-visit

I began by taking sketching of the major surfaces that enclosed the lift & stair lobby spaces across the 5 floors from level 3-6. Apart from this, dimension taking was crucial to portray an accurate representation of a familiar space.

After laborious note-taking & recording measurements - I looked at the UV mapping and Unwrapping technique involved between materials & the objects they represented in digital space.

I later used a similar method to ‘unwrap’ the lobby spaces of the site. [Below]

Notes

“Avery Hall is not that clean”
Get some grunge & dirt in the visualizations
Integrate a more developed narrative that romanticises the ritual
How can sunlight influence your ritual of traversing through Avery Hall? Is this a love letter in your last semester? Is this a critique of current/future conditions? Is this a dystopic or utopic portrayal of current spaces
