Spaces & Fictions

A conceptual & visual exploration into the digital representations of familiar spaces

The project began with a personal fascination for digital representations of spaces and alternate realities. As part of the 94day capstone project for the Master of Architecture program at Columbia University GSAPP, Space & Fictions delivers weird, and at times questionable, portrayals of familiar spaces on campus. Representing personal and shared sentiments surrounding Avery Hall (Architecture building on campus), these visualizations and animations aim to capture and communicate the biases embedded within subjects who physically encounter these sites. Measuring + Drawing + Recording

Creating a convincing representation of a real space necessitated the laborious task of measuring & drawing out spaces of interest. only from these accuracies could further additions & modifications take place

Entrance Lobby

The stair & elevator lobby on the ground floor(designated 3rd floor in Avery’s wayfinding system) is the first space you encounter when entering the architecture building. It has access to Avery Library, an accessible treasure chest containing the supposed best collection of architectural books & records in the world. To many, it is just a transitory space before their intended destinations.

Journey to the Top

The following set of images represents the visual journey of an architecture student in Avery Hall. These are spaces encountered after leaving the entrance lobby. These spaces of an intermediary & transitory nature given the major function of ‘circulating’ through to other work spaces.

Avery Library - Familar

The next set of images captures Avery Library in its ‘normal’ state when encountered in-person.

Avery Library - Alternate

The next set of images presents an Avery Library in an alternate reality. From a personal standpoint, Avery library has been a time-consuming space. One where users regularly lose track of time yet are embedded within a space containing materials that stretch across centuries. The temporal controls & implications of Avery Library are significant.
