Above & Below

A design proposal for the Schaghticoke First Nations people on a 73-hectare forested land parcel in Columbia County, upstate New York. The focus was on creating a harmonious home base and sanctuary whilst learning from sustainable indigenous ways of living. Certain primary constructs of importance include the Gateway House & Camping pods. A need for flexibility and light landscape intervention were prioritized. Gateway House

Performing as a visitor center, the gateway house marks the first of many destinations upon arrival. Physically it provides a unique ground + elevated experience of the forest. In addition, symbolically each end of the structure represents the past and future as a framed view of your entrance and departure are exaggerated. Arranged in a linear and elongated shape that curves between existing trees

Camping Pod

Designed as a stand-alone structure, the module provides a unique and immersive camping experience nestled among the trees. Supporting up to 4 people at any one time, its attachment to a single mature Oak tree minimizes human interference on the landscape.
